November 8, 2006 at 7:51:00 PM CET [altersweisheiten] November 8, 2006 at 7:51:00 PM CET File under news which give me the blues: Erster Gedanke, jetzt bin ich also ein Durchschnittsdeutscher. Na toll, das war ja schon immer mein Traum. ;-) Nach dem Nachrechnen. Oh Gott. Stimmt ja gar nicht. Jetzt bin ich offiziell ein alter Sack. Und Alzheimerkandidat auch noch. Geburtstage von anderen merke ich mir ja sowieso nur schlecht, aber mein eigenes Lebensalter sollte ich doch eigentlich parat haben. link (no comments) ... comment [music, songs] November 8, 2006 at 7:46:00 PM CET Neil Young - See the Sky about to Rain Catherine has got this habit of listening to one album over and over. Right now she has Neil Young's On the Beach which I bought in the summer 2004 in Norway, I think it was in Bergen, in her car cd player. And it drives me crazy. I think I have only been in her car three times in the last couple of weeks. The first time I was happy to listen to that album for the twenty minutes or so it takes from Frankfurt city to where we live and it made me feel good, especially the fact that I recognised it immediately. The second and third time I thought, not again, you are killing that album. If not for you then at least for me. Have pity with me. She didn't of course. I need variation in what I listen to. Except when I discover something new. Anyways See the Sky about to Rain came on the third time I was in her car - it also came on the first time by the way - and it smashed me. Again. We listened to it in the dark and it had that effect that it made the world stand still for the five minutes it lasted. I just listened to a live version of it and it didn't have that effect on me. It was dark again, I was in front of my computer in the cellar but that wasn't the reason. The reason that the live version didn't do it for me was that it didn't have the pedal steel guitar on it. The pedal steel is probably the instrument which is mostly responsible for the sound of American country music. A genre I don't appreciate usually. But when this instrument is used like it is used on See the Sky about to Rain where it perfectly fits with Neil Young's plaintive, subdued voice and where it reaches for something out of this world, I love it. Listen to the last two minutes of this song and you will know what I mean. Transcendence is the word for the way that instrument is played here. Of course this song has more charms. The sad lyrics, the shaking electric piano, the laid-back drums, the vigorous bass and the short mouth harp section which finishes it. According to Shakey, the comprehensive Neil Young biography by Jimmy McDonough there is an unreleased solo demo of this song. Not too hot on that one. (Un)fortunately I have listened to a version which can't be bettered first. It has engraved itself in my brain too much. Even if the demo was more touching, it wouldn't be virgin for me any more. link (no comments) ... comment November 6, 2006 at 9:13:00 PM CET [deutsche blogs] November 6, 2006 at 9:13:00 PM CET Noch was zu Schmidt liest Proust. Vielleicht sollte das Blog eher Schmidt ist Proust heißen... link (no comments) ... comment [films] November 6, 2006 at 8:14:00 PM CET Martin Scorsese - No Direction Home: Bob Dylan (2005) I have just seen part 1 of this documentary on the early Bob Dylan which covers the time up to the Newport folk festival 1963. And what strikes me most about it is the contrast between the person who is depicted here and the same person commenting on it forty years on. They do not seem to be carved from the same wood. The young Dylan was a lucid poet, an agile intellectual. The old one seems to be a boring plain man who has no connection whatsoever to his earlier self. This to me is the proof - and not the fact that almost all witnesses are saying the same thing - that Dylan was a medium in the early 60s, a medium which picked up the vibe of the times and transformed it into instantly classic songs speaking to so many people. Like Liam Clancy from the The Clancy Brothers which made Irish folk known in the States in the 60s says: He articulated what the rest of us wanted to say
But couldn’t say
Dylan seems to have lost that power to absorb the spirit of the time like a sponge and turn it into art. Maybe there is no spirit anymore today. It is quite striking that the same thing happened to Joni Mitchell. Who has given up music altogether for the better. What she says today is mundane. But the songs she wrote in the early 70s were about such amazing and often prophetic observations (mainly of the relationship between men and women). And she succeeded in condensing them into lyrical images fused with unforgettable tunes. Joan Baez tells this story about Dylan typing lyrics for songs on his typewriter in Carmel where they lived together for a while and asking her what they mean. According to her he acknowledged her interpretation and said that he doesn't know what they mean himself but that there will be people all around the world who will try to decipher those songs. If that was true he would have been a prophet on a meta level at least. Joan Baez's warble when they sang With God on Our Side together at the end of Newport '63. I had forgotten how beautifully warm her voice was. Must get a 60s album by her. Which one? Dave van Ronk is the jovial guy with Stetson. He tells a story about the old folk song The House of the Rising Sun. I won't tell it here. It is a good one. Four stars. I only know the Pere Ubu which is wonderful, the Howe Gelb which doesn't work for me and the Lambchop which I haven't warmed up to yet. P.S. I listened to a couple of the Bonnie Prince Billy songs and some clips from the Morrissey. In both cases I am positively sure that I have enough (& better) albums in my CD and LP shelves of the artists. Sufjan Stevens? TV on the Radio? Flaming Lips? Not at all interested in that kind of bombast. So in the end Bruckmaier's music taste and mine don't seem to overlap a lot. The Ramblin' Jack Elliott must be good though. link (2 comments) ... comment November 4, 2006 at 12:49:00 AM CET [travel] November 4, 2006 at 12:49:00 AM CET Reisen ist die beste Therapie, die es gibt.
