yesterday morning in the suburban train i started reading salinger's nine stories. the stories are perfect for my ride to frankfurt. the train takes 18 minutes. to read one story takes about the same time. the first story, a perfect day for bananafish immediately grabbed me. there are only few authors who are able to write in an easy, everyday language and they hit it. salinger is one, camus another, hemingway and carver come to mind too. this story reminded me most of brautigan though. there is a fantasy at work there, a surreal lucidity hidden in the mundane. when i arrived at the main station i had just finished the last phrase and i was shocked. the smile on my face which had been there from the first sentence on was gone. i wasn't prepared for the end. i had been enchanted so much that i didn't anticipate something bad could happen. though it was clear from the beginning on. but salinger had weaved a web of hope i got caught up in. maybe that is the art of writing. to get the reader so much immersed into the fiction that he forgets everything about logic and common sense.

rather interesting longish review of a new book on the velvet underground.

it juxtaposes the velvet underground with grateful dead. they both started at the same time with first releases in 1967, they were both from a coast (from fringes of the usa), both had a penchant for long improvisational pieces, both were into drugs (gd into lsd, vu into amphetamines and heroin), both had an art background (gd with kesey, vu with warhol) and they even shared the same name in the beginning, something i didn't know. they called themselves warlocks. and they were! but there was a third band already in existence with this name and they had to choose different ones.

grateful dead were the ultimate hippie band, velvet underground the ultimate rock'n' roll meets avantgarde group. whereas in the 60s the dead were clearly more influential, it changed later on (think punk). the dead were more about nature, about being on the road, the velvets more about being stuck inside your flat, more about the dark side of the city/the human nature. the dead (i relistened to live/dead) had this folky way of singing in inoffensive, high-pitch voice about fairy taleish subjects in a florid language. it always turned me off. and still does. prog is looming in there. the style i loved to death in my adolescence. but i can suddenly totally understand that the jamming was so attractive in the late 60s. and had this communal (i think i mean collective but i hate that word) appeal. if i had been there i would have been a deadhead myself, i guess. if only to meet neal cassady. even totally bummed out.

gibt es im süddeutschen (hessisch eingerechnet) eigentlich eine tendenz zur neutrifizierung (sorry) von substantiven?

eine bekannte von mir (aus wiesbaden stammend) sagt immer das quiche. dabei gibt es im französischen doch gar kein neutrum!

neulich in einem blog einer frankfurterin das mousse und das joghurt gelesen. mei o mei.

und dann gerade in einem österreichischen blog das mischmasch.

oder hat das was mit dem verschwinden der geschlechter zu tun? ist der androgyne zeitgeist nun auch in der sprache angekommen?

aber fast alle blogger, die late to the party gekommen sind, sagen der blog.

schade eigentlich, wenn wir eines tages alle nur noch pidgin englisch sprechen, brauch ich mich über solche grammatikdetails dann auch nicht mehr zu echauffieren.

procrastinationalism

Hab ich letzten Mittwoch morgen zufällig im Radio gehört. Nach längerer Zeit mal wieder mit der Kutsche zur Arbeit, die Parkplatzsituation ist angespannt derzeit und außerdem tue ich was für die Umwelt, für den Geldbeutel allerdings nicht gerade bei 3 Uro 55 für eine einfache Fahrt mit der S-Bahn. Dachte mir noch, das ist doch nicht von Bach? Irgendwas war anders. Vielleicht leichter. Und heller. Sehr beruhigend und das Herz erwärmend. Hat mich derart angesprochen, dass ich sofort die CD bestellen musste. Die Prosa der Klassikkritiker erinnert mich ja manchmal etwas an die der französischen Weinschmecker, z.B. im Guide Hachette. Wenn sie gut ist, verbindet sie Analyse der Materie mit kunstvollen literarischen Bildern und macht Lust auf ihr Objekt. Mein Lieblingssatz ist übrigens der letzte (der war auch im Radio gelaufen). Ein allegro non tanto. Messerscharfe Streicher schneiden durch den Äther, das Cello beruhigt das aufgeputschte Gemüt. Klassemorgenautofahrmusik.

Der erste Spargel ist reif Nee, oder? Spargel stechen im Schneetreiben, oder was? Kein Wunder, dass sich da keine deutschen Erntehelfer finden.

Die Wikipedia über Peter Schöffer, einen meiner 32.768 (da sind bestimmt einige mehrfach vertreten) Urahnenväter (Generationsbezeichnungen). Er heiratete Christina, die Tochter von Johannes Fust (s. voriger Eintrag).

Gerade lese ich noch, dass auf dem Gutenbergdenkmal am Roßmarkt auch meine beiden Vorfahren mit drauf sind. Zur Rechten Gutenbergs steht Johannes Fust, zur Linken sein Schwiegersohn Peter Schöffer. Sehr lustig. Zu einem Chaselauf vor ein paar Jahren haben wir unser Gruppenbild (müsste ich jetzt rauskramen) genau davor gemacht. Mit dem kleinsten Team ever, zwei Kolleginnen und mir.

gestern mal wieder etwas schach gespielt. fritz gegen fritz. hatte ihn auf freizeitspieler-niveau eingestellt. und nachdem ich ein oder zwei partien gewonnen hatte, fragte er mich doch glatt, ob ich anand oder kasparov wäre. war nett. ich glaube, ich spiele jetzt öfter mit ihm.
