March 17, 2007 at 3:19:00 PM CET [music, songs] March 17, 2007 at 3:19:00 PM CET At Swim Two Birds - Things We'll Never Do What can I say? I could do some stupid name-dropping as I have done in the past here. Roger Quigley indulges in and sings about lost love like Robert Wratten, is surrounded by an otherworldly, dreamy, floating guitar sound à la Vini Reilly, makes the time you listen to his music stand still like Nick Drake etc. Or I could write that I have listened to so much dull and average music in the last months that I was not prepared for this song. Not prepared for the calm maelstrom drawing me back into the realm of melancolia. A place where I have spent most time of my life. I am attracted to it but I know that I shouldn't stay there any longer. Had my dose. I like to think that I only go there still because of nostalgia. And that I have left it behind. Which may well be wishful thinking. Didn't I tell you I had nothing to say? link (no comments) ... comment March 1, 2007 at 10:15:00 PM CET [aufgeschnappt] March 1, 2007 at 10:15:00 PM CET "I Need Some Fine Wine and You, You Need to Be Nicer." link (no comments) ... comment [don't ask me] March 1, 2007 at 12:42:00 PM CET a question of light this morning the sky was dark grey, the clouds were low and it was raining. i almost wanted to take an umbrella to walk the five meters to my car. at lunch time it was still raining but the sky was clearing. i enjoyed walking in the rain and receiving the raindrops on my head. they were a promise instead of a punishment. link (no comments) ... comment February 28, 2007 at 11:13:00 PM CET [meta] February 28, 2007 at 11:13:00 PM CET Hide ratio Three out of the ten last posts are offline. link (no comments) ... comment [music, artists] February 28, 2007 at 10:43:00 PM CET late love i am totally falling in love with slowdive. a band i totally missed out in the first half of the nineties. as i was too busy smoking herbal substances and talking about the mysteries of everyday life. we were enlightened by each other and ourselves every night but we forgot about it the next morning. maybe that is what life is about. slowdive have a blurry vision of music/life. which is quite a precise vision if you think of it. link (no comments) ... comment [geschlechterkrampf] February 28, 2007 at 10:25:00 PM CET Maybe females invented weapons for hunting and an interpretation of the observation that female and apparently only female chimpanzees use sharpened branches to kill bush babies: An unholy union of psychoanalysis and sociobiology: another Totem and Taboo P.S. It all sounds pretty dubious to me but what do I know, I'm a man. I don't even know any female chimpanzees. link (no comments) ... comment February 23, 2007 at 12:18:00 AM CET [meta] February 23, 2007 at 12:18:00 AM CET Man muss sich den nicht bloggenden Blogger als einen glücklichen Menschen vorstellen. link (3 comments) ... comment February 17, 2007 at 6:07:00 PM CET [chess and games] February 17, 2007 at 6:07:00 PM CET Power to the women ... but only on the chessboard There's an interesting book by Marilyn Yalom, Birth of the Chess Queen, that is about the pre-modern history of chess. When chess came to Europe, via Byzantium, there was no queen. There was a vizier piece. But the European change was to make the vizier a queen. Still, the Queen, like the king, was not an aggressive piece: it could only move a space at a time. During this period, chess was a popular court game for both men and women. The change in the game came with giving the queen the power the piece has today. This made the game faster, and it also led to exhibits of chess mastery in which, gradually, women chess players were weeded out. Women turned to card games - except in Russia, which was the last nation to accept the new, powerful queen. Russia turned to European chess under Catherine the great.
From the comments to the seduction of chess, a post on chess and modernism P.S. Another interesting bit further down in the comments: ... in the best chess country in the world and in history (Russia) the Queen is actually still called a ферзь (ferz). That means something like minister, counsellor, advisor - but anyway is, most definitely, male.
