January 21, 2004 at 7:54:00 AM CET [music, albums] January 21, 2004 at 7:54:00 AM CET New Stereolab album Apparently there is a new Stereolab album out on February, 2nd. It is titled Margerine Eclipse. I suppose Margerine stands for Mary Hansen, one of the band members who was killed about a year ago in a car/bicycle accident. Strangely enough Stereolab's label Duophonic does not have anything on the new release on their website whereas the album has leaked to the p2p networks a while ago. That's the modern times. The consumer is more up-to-date than the distributor. I found an mp3 of the song Margerine Rock at Kingblind. Somehow Stereolab had lost me quite early in their career around 1995 or even before when they started integrating film scores, Brazilian music and other stuff in their music. Their sound carpet which used to be low-fi and simple became too thick and colourful for my ears. Now this new song is very much in the vein of their early records around Peng! when Mary Hansen wasn't yet in the band. It's joyful repetitive minimal pop with its roots going back to Neu!, Velvet Underground, Beach Boys etc. And Lætitia Sadier's voice is sexy as ever. I think this will be the first Stereolab album in ten years that I will get for myself. P.S. Paul at The Rub also wrote on this album recently and there is a detailed track-by-track anaylsis here at Amazon UK (It's a disgrace. Amazon still doesn't respect customers enough to offer their reviews a permalink.) link (no comments) ... comment January 20, 2004 at 7:02:00 PM CET [deutsche blogs] January 20, 2004 at 7:02:00 PM CET Traurige Alkoholikerschicksalsgeschichte des Tages link (no comments) ... comment [journal] January 20, 2004 at 6:03:00 AM CET 41 link (2 comments) ... comment January 18, 2004 at 11:47:00 PM CET [meta] January 18, 2004 at 11:47:00 PM CET irgendwann glaubt jeder an seine eigenen lügen link (no comments) ... comment [humour] January 18, 2004 at 10:20:00 PM CET From the ILM Flaming Lips - Zaireeka thread: Since I can only hear out of one ear, whether the music is coming out of eight speakers or two, it's ALL MONO. Needless to say Zaireeka parties have been kind of more blah than for other folks because of it. If you love the sound of a voice saying "1...2..4!3.." followed by a chorus of "fuck!"'s, then you'll love a State College Zaireeka party.

Anthony - if you spin round really fast then you'll get it in octophonic sound. Or something. -- Llahtuos Kcin (auspiciousfis...), January 16th, 2004. I actually e-mailed Dave Fridmann about it once and he recommended I spin around in an office chair, or put the CDs in different rooms and just walk around. The first option seems like it would inspire dizziness more than anything (which might actually make the album sound more psychedelic - what the hey), and the second require me to actually buy this album...and 2 more CD players. -- Anthony Miccio (anthonymicci...), January 17th, 2004. link (no comments) ... comment January 16, 2004 at 9:07:00 PM CET [music, lyrics] January 16, 2004 at 9:07:00 PM CET Weblog theme, part 3 These are some of the lyrics of the song I was asking about here: It was January, 1963
When Johnny came home with a gift for me
He said I bought it for you because I love you
And I bought it for you because it's your birthday, too
He was so very nice, he was so very kind
To think of me at this point in time
I used to think of him, he used think of me
He told me to close my eyes
My gift would be a great surprise
I saw tears were in his eyes
He never meant to hurt me
Oh, God, Johnny, don't point that gun at me
There's so many ways our lives have changed
But please, I beg, don't do this to me
Johnny, don't point that gun at me
Can I save my life at any price?
For God's sake won't you listen to me?

Fehlfarben you probably missed. They were the best German band ever and they reunited recently. Anyways check these two mp3s (via chill): link (no comments) ... comment [music, links] January 16, 2004 at 8:00:00 PM CET Musicians' weblogs, online diaries and stuff That's those I have spotted. Do you know of any others?

Next page
