February 10, 2004 at 8:49:00 PM CET [music, links] February 10, 2004 at 8:49:00 PM CET What your iPod knows about you The Village Voice: Features: The Essay: Pod People by Izzy Grinspan (copied & pasted from the sofa): An iPod, by contrast, keeps no secrets. The iPod records what songs have been played both most recently and most often, so it quickly becomes a record of the owner's internal aural landscape. Listening to someone else's iPod is thus an intimate, almost invasive activity. On the scale of personal exposure, it's not exactly trading diaries, but it's much more revealing than a mix tape—for example, I never would have expected the boyfriend to have an ethereal cover version of 'Leaving on a Jet Plane,' mislabeled 'Björk,' as his most recently played track. It also quickly gets self-referential: When I got my iPod back, I put on the 'Recently Played' list to see what bands he'd checked out. My iPod then dutifully recorded me listening to the songs he'd heard.

Es ist ein Unfug, jemanden zu retten, der sich ganz offensichtlich und selbstverständlich vergiften will. link (one comment) ... comment [music, thoughts] February 10, 2004 at 6:45:00 PM CET Pop discussion in blogs The Rambler draws a couple of Venn diagrams on the elements of the set of pop music and the set of non-pop music (inspired by clap clap blog's posting on three definitions of pop). I guess I like the music exactly on the border where art and pop or music for its own sake and music with a function meet. Like Howe Gelb for example. He is doing it also for the money (not for the big bucks though) but mainly doing it for itself. He struggles (I guess) and his down to earth music seems to show it. Maybe I am just repeating the old myth of the poor sincere artist here but who cares. link (no comments) ... comment [literature] February 10, 2004 at 12:44:00 PM CET Waiting for a superman An anecdote, too nice too be true as we say in German: Bernard's book is organised alphabetically, according to characters' first names: Godot comes after George Smiley. There are several apocryphal stories about where Beckett got the name from. One is that he was in a town through which the Tour de France had recently passed, and came across a group of people standing expectantly on a street corner long after the cyclists had disappeared. He asked them what they were doing. 'Nous attendons Godot,' they replied, explaining that Godot was the oldest and slowest competitor in the race.

A psychology test with 20 questions taking 10 minutes. I got 16/20. Weird. During the test I had the impression I had no clue. In the end I spotted all the fake smiles. But only 60% of the genuine smiles. Does this make me a misanthrope or what? link (no comments) ... comment February 9, 2004 at 11:09:00 PM CET [music, books] February 9, 2004 at 11:09:00 PM CET Richard S. on Richard W. [Wagner's] Siegfried was abominable. Not a trace of coherent melodies. It would kill a cat and would turn rocks into scrambled eggs from fear of these hideous discords. My ears buzzed from these abortions of chords, if one can still call them such. The opening of the third act made enough noise to split the ears. The whole crap could be reduced to 100 measures, for it is always the same thing, and always equally tedious.

A Walloon band who played tonight chez Bernard Lenoir. The concert was diffused on France Inter. Their music is partly drone pop partly melancholic songwriter stuff. There is a warm melodic aspect reminding me of American Analog Set. The drone parts also make me think of the early Dandy Warhols. The singer's voice isn't very pronounced. Sometimes it veers towards a non-annoying falsetto. The song Flavour which was heavily relying on a bass figure from PJ Harvey's Victory was the noisiest thing they played. I had the impression I was back in 1991/92. This is the kind of eclecticism I love. Tomorrow the concert should be streamable here. In my little music universe Girls in Hawaii have taken the place of dEUS who used to be the best Belgian band up until today. link (no comments) ... comment [music, links] February 9, 2004 at 6:13:00 PM CET dreamy - fluffy - ethereal Stream all the rare and unreleased Cocteau Twins tracks (altogether 25) from here. My fave, an edited version of Heaven or Las Vegas (via largehearted boy). P.S. Somehow I find the sound of the Cocteau Twins which was so innovative and breathtaking in the 80s didn't age well. It's a pity as I still like the idea of it. link (no comments) ... comment [philosophy] February 9, 2004 at 12:59:00 PM CET Adorniten aller Länder vereinigt euch Sehe gerade, dass es außer unserem Antville Minima Moralia Weblog noch einen Ort im Internetz gibt, wo der olle Adornotext momentan diskutiert wird. By the way, die Diskussion zu 108 Prinzessin Eidechse war (und ist?) recht aufschlussreich. link (5 comments) ... comment February 8, 2004 at 10:30:00 PM CET [meta] February 8, 2004 at 10:30:00 PM CET Less is more, part 103 I decimated the blogroll from 125 to 103 blogs. Somehow I didn't attain my target of 99 (with one spot left for someone I haven't read enough in the past). Sorry but there were four blogs which link to me in the 22 I unlinked. And I won't hold my recent promise to give the reasons why I deleted a blog from the roll. But if you miss yours you can ask me via e-mail. Or in the comments if you are courageous. link (no comments) ... comment ... Next page
