Iggy und Tom haben ja weitgehend improvisiert. Sie sagen beide, dass sie eigentlich mit dem Rauchen aufgehört haben. Was ich nicht wusste, ist, dass es wirklich stimmte. Die beiden wurden durch diese kleine Szene wieder rückfällig. Tom war ein wildes Rauchtier, der hat sich nachts den Wecker gestellt, um eine zu rauchen. Kein Quatsch, Mann. Er hat sich später bitter bei mir beklagt. Iggy ebenfalls.
Scheiße, genau das habe ich mir gedacht als ich die Episode im Film gesehen habe. Wie die beiden da genüsslich den Rauch inhalieren. Als würde die Zeit in der Szene stehenbleiben. Wie Iggy Pop die halb abgerauchte Zigarette ausdrückt. Mit dem schlechten Gewissen von einem der genau weiß, dass er da gerade wieder angefangen hatte. Tom Waits war in der Szene übrigens viel interessanter und cooler als der langwelige und hektisch-zerfahrene Iggy Pop. Tom Waits war auch unglaublich jung in dem Ausschnitt. Kein Wunder. Na ja, die Vibration der Bässe kannte ich ja schon. Ich war früher stolz darauf, unabhängig zu sein von der Musik, frei von der Musiksucht der Hörenden. Aber als ich eine Woche nach der ersten Operation in einem Bekleidungsgeschäft stand, fühlte ich, dass etwas Seltsames im Raum schwebte. Es zog mich innerlich. Ich wandte mich an einen anderen Kunden und sagte: Entschuldigung, ich höre schlecht, aber was da im Raum ist – ist das Musik? Der Mann starrte mich verdutzt an: Ja, hier läuft Musik. Da wusste ich, ich hatte zum ersten Mal Musik gehört. Ich kaufte mir eine CD: Mozart am Morgen. Das war genau das Richtige für mich. Kleine Mozart-Stücke mit Oboe, Klavier und Flöte. Ich konnte die Töne nicht gleich unterscheiden. Ist das eine Klarinette oder ein Klavier? Ich musste die Instrumente erst lernen. Ich höre die Musik natürlich nicht so wie Sie, Sie würden das, was ich höre, scheußlich finden. Aber ich finde, meine Musik hört sich wunderbar an.«

But for two reasons this television coverage left me unsatisfied. First, I felt that the small screen with its shallow colours was quite inadequate to the vastness of space. It made the whole enterprise look like an inferior edition of Star Trek.
Secondly, it seemed to me that the fear of boring the general public had led the editors and commentators to present the transmissions from space in an up tempo, 'newsy' manner that was unsympathetic: short shots, fast cuts and too many experts obscuring the grandeur and strangeness of the event with a patina of down to earth chatter. Speedy delivery from London! I am listening to it for the third time now and it keeps getting better and better. Reminding me of the Kosmische Musik of Tangerine Dream and Cluster in the early 70s. Some parts are quite intimidating and almost freak me out. But it is mostly slowly flowing and ebbing music. I like to listen to it in the background when doing something else like reading or writing. Somehow the music depresses me when I focus too much on it. It feels empty and vain on its own. Apparently Mr Budd (who is born in 1936 like my father) hasn't got an internet page but there is a useful fan page with audio samples of the albums here. When driving home from work today I almost crashed into another car when listening to Plateaux. The traffic lights were off (blinking in orange) and I completely forgot that I didn't have the priority. Dangerous piano music. Switching my brain almost instantly into daydream mode. By the way I have come to think that Plateaux is one of the best albums of all-time. Maybe even the one and only to take to the island. link (no comments) ... comment ... Next page
