What is it about 1986? It's not that there weren't any good albums out then (some great ones in the list) but the mainstream was pretty moribund. I remember that year for music by people like Lionel Richie and Mr. Mister -- ugh. Surely you have your own reasons for picking a Smiths compilation over the excellent Queen Is Dead -- and I always thought Your Funeral, My Trial was an EP, and Kicking Against The Pricks the Bad Seeds album of that year, but maybe I'm wrong, and again you have your reasons. I picked the lovely Victorialand as my choice from that year, but there were plenty of other great records around then: Blood and Chocolate by Costello, I Against I by Bad Brains, Candy Apple Grey by Hüsker Dü. Still that's an interesting cross-section. Well, now I have to listen to some Cocteaus, and once again we have Close Your Eyes to thank for it... :-) ... link

you are right, i just realised that i picked the wrong smiths album, brendan. the world won't listen is from early 1987. it should say the queen is dead in the poll, too late to change now. but i have my reasons for preferring the compilation. which i will explain when 1987 will feature. this changes everything for me, i don't know any more my favourite from 1986. the nick cave is a double ep but a very long one and i find it so much more compelling than kicking .... in 86 i wasn't too much into music, it probably shows. i purchased most albums later. hüsker dü i never got into, costello neither. i don't like his voice, i guess. ... link ... comment |
