great bands just sound like themselves. i haven't heard a band just sounding like themselves for a long time. maybe massive attack. but they didn't really on their best album mezzanine. more like the cure for the late 90s. sufjan stevens does but he is not a band.

p.s. of course the beta band sounds special. but their singing is absolutely unsupportable. arab strap? always the same song. the ones which sound like themselves today are so boring. please prove me wrong if you can.

Ich frage mich gerade, ob man sich Musik schöntrinken kann. Zuerst dachte ich ja natürlich, angesäuselt kann auch Schlagermusik gut sein. Aber eigentlich stimmt das nicht. Es ist das Setting, was die schlechte Musik erträglich macht. Man hört sie im Grunde gar nicht richtig, man konzentriert sich auf das Gespräch, aufs Flirten, auf das Drumherum.

Wenn ich mein eigener DJ bin, was meistens der Fall ist, und was getrunken habe (kommt auch vor), ist mein Anspruch an die Musik eher höher als niedriger als wenn ich nüchtern bin. Allein schon das Problem aus meiner Sammlung das Richtige auszuwählen. Plötzlich ist alles Mist, zu offensichtlich, zu abgenudelt. Und doch ist in diesem Zusammenhang die Vertrautheit mit der Musik ganz wichtig. Wobei die Musik schon etwas älter sein sollte und fast vergessen. Nichts ist schöner als das Wiederentdecken. Man hat sich Reihen von Albumtiteln angesehen, die alle mal wichtig oder halbwichtig waren, aber jetzt gerade nur noch kalter Kaffee. Und dann sieht man ein Album im CD-Regal, das man lange nicht gehört hat, von dem man weiß, dass es gut ist, aber nicht mehr ganz genau wie. Und es ist klar, dass es diese CD (s.u.) jetzt sein muss. Und dann ist sie auch noch viel besser als in der Erinnerung. Ist mir vorgestern so gegangen. Und heute wieder.

By the way I am just relistening to PJ Harvey's awesome To Bring You My Love. An absolute killer. Her "bass" organ "riff" on Working for the Man. Her shrieking on The Dancer. What a power girl. Minus ten pints. I am very much looking forward to her new one.

Somehow this really makes me think of Michelle Shocked's first (almost accidental) album Texas Campfire Tapes. Put through the shredder or something. Coco Rosie is a name to keep in mind. La Maison de Mon Rêve is an album title easy to retain.

Monk's Dream is a seminal jazz album from 1962. I like it because it gives me exactly that relaxed late night feeling I expect from classic jazz. My heretical theory on most good jazz music is that it flows and that it does not ask anything from the listener. That it is the opposite of obtrusive. That it rests in itself in a way. Monk's Dream is a perfect example. We have a quartet with a rhythm section of bass and drums plus piano and tenor sax providing the chords and harmonies. Everything is in equilibrium. I read that Monk has a special piano style. Probably he has but I am not experienced enough with it to confirm this. My favourite tracks on this album are the blues numbers. Blues Five Spot starts with a piano theme where the tones are following each other like the pearls on a bead. On Blue Bolivar Blues there is a lot of lyrical tenor sax. The improvisation quality of the saxophone which I love about this instrument is fully realised. Later on Monk plays single keys on the piano in a simple but memorable succession. He then improvises a little to the left and right and sax and piano come back to the motif. There is nothing spectacular about all this but this is exactly which is amazing. The ease and lightness of it all. There is nothing more satisfying after a "hard" office day than having a Weißbier or two and listening to this kind of untightening music.

P.S. It could well be that when I say jazz I mean bebop. For me that is the incarnation of jazz, I guess.

„Sie müssen früher hochschalten“, sagt Pfeiffer. Er sagt es immer als Erstes. Denn man könne es nicht oft genug sagen, findet er. Heutige Motoren erreichten bereits bei 1750 Umdrehungen ihr maximales Drehmoment – „und kaputt kriegen Sie die ohnehin nicht mehr“. Das heißt konkret: Tempo 50 im fünften Gang fahren. Wer noch im dritten fährt, braucht doppelt so viel Sprit, egal, ob mit Benziner oder Diesel.
Und bloß nicht auskuppeln, wenn der Wagen in der Ebene rollt. Denn sofort zieht der Motor seinen Leerlaufverbrauch. Bleibt der Gang aber drin und der Motor damit in Schwung, reagiert bei Rücknahme des Gases die Schubabschaltung – Verbrauch: null Komma null. (Anm. von mir: das stelle ich jetzt mal etwas in Frage, zumindest wenn man nur im Leerlauf noch mit angemessener Geschwindigkeit bis zur roten Ampel rollen kann)
Außerdem spart natürlich, wer vorausschauend fährt. Wer zum Sicherheitsabstand noch einen Pufferabstand hält – damit er nicht jedes Mal bremsen muss, wenn es der Vordermann tut. (Anm. von mir: besonders wichtig im Stau, so dass man nicht dauernd neu anfahren muss)
„Erhöhen Sie den Reifendruck um ein Bar“, rät Pfeiffer. Maßstab sei stets der für das beladene Fahrzeug angegebene Höchstdruck. „Das bringt alleine schon fünf Prozent Einsparung.“
Die Klimaanlage brauche zwischen 0,5 und 1,6 Liter auf 100 Kilometer, sagt Pfeiffer, die Heckscheibenheizung 0,4 Liter. 100 Kilo Zuladung in der Stadt bringen 0,6 Liter Mehrverbrauch. Ein Dachgepäckträger fresse bei 80 Stundenkilometern 0,7 Liter, ein Fahrrad auf dem Dach gar bis zu vier Liter.
„Und wenn das Auto hält, schalten Sie den Motor ab.“ Selbst wenn es nur wenige Sekunden sind: „Dem Anlasser schadet das nicht.“
„Beim Anfahren nur eine Fahrzeuglänge im Ersten bleiben, dann gleich in den Zweiten“
Tatsächlich haben die Probanden ihren Verbrauch von durchschnittlich 7,7 auf 6,3 Liter pro 100 Kilometer gekappt. Macht eine Einsparung von gut 18 Prozent.
Zugleich sind die Fahrten im Mittel schneller geworden, von 31,6 auf 33,9 Kilometer pro Stunde. „Ist auch ganz normal“, sagt der Kursleiter, „sparsam fahren heißt nicht unbedingt langsam fahren.“ Ein flotter Start sei besser als die „Streichelgasmethode“.

Wenn man gar nicht Auto fährt, spart man natürlich noch mehr. Den Kommentar nehme ich jetzt mal vorweg.
