November 10, 2004 at 11:34:00 PM CET [shopping etc] November 10, 2004 at 11:34:00 PM CET Absinth ist ziemlich lecker. Der Kater hält sich nach meinen recht spärlichen Erfahrungen in Grenzen. link (no comments) ... comment [music, lists] November 10, 2004 at 10:46:00 PM CET Just to remind me what I can look forward to in my mailbox

Six tracks are online. Awesome as always. link (4 comments) ... comment November 9, 2004 at 10:12:00 PM CET [music, programs] November 9, 2004 at 10:12:00 PM CET Heute ausgewählt von Karl Lippegaus SWR2 Musik Spezial: Radiophon

Una Baines, the keyboarder and Martin Bramah, the singer came from an early incarnation of The Fall. On their only longplay from the 80s, 1982's The Greatest Hit (Money Mountain) they did not sound as Mark E. Smith's seminal indie rock band at all if you listen to the two songs on their download page. A Year With No Head is more of a short psychedelic guitar hymn in the vein of The Doors. Bad Education is a gem of a pop ballad using the unforgettable line Think I’ve read too many books
Seen too much TV
The third downloadable song I can recommend to you is Wierd World where Bramah sings in a grave voice not quite unlike Peter Hammill. Lots of organ and a flair of gothic otherworldliness. Apparently they toured a lot with Nico in the 80's which is not surprising given their dark atmospheric style. They have a new record out called Mystic Bud (without Baines) of which I have heard good things though the available mp3 Black Peg's Son is not really my cup of tea. The second band came from Glasgow and was simply called The Orchids. They were on the famous (long defunct) Sarah label whose catalogue is taken care of Shinkansen now (no Orchids rereleases yet). Sarah stood for twee pop which was made immortal by the Field Mice. I wrote about them before and called them the missing link between The Smiths and Belle and Sebastian. In retrospect I still think this description is ok but there definitely is a rather gradual but steep decline from the first to the last band in this trilogy. Anyways The Orchids were more adventurous than twee. They did jangle guitar pop, dancy tracks and also a song called Yawn which is a moody psychedelic seven minute piece with distorted guitars. You can download this trouvaille over at The Mystical Beast who has much more info on them and more mp3s (check also the two last posts). link (one comment) ... comment November 5, 2004 at 9:35:00 PM CET [shopping etc] November 5, 2004 at 9:35:00 PM CET Primitivo is the best of all simple wines in the world after Retsina. The New World version, the red Zinfandel (excellent vineyard) can be even better by the way. They have this dark red wonder of concentrated grapes from Puglia chez Tengelmann now. For 3 euros. Forget Barolo, forget Brunello, forget Shiraz. This is it. Tonight. link (one comment) ... comment November 4, 2004 at 6:52:00 PM CET [music, links] November 4, 2004 at 6:52:00 PM CET Viennese electrickeries Stream 4 tracks of the new Radian album Juxtaposition over at the Euroranch. So much better than Fennesz pompous guitar glitch. This is what their label Thrill Jockey says about the recording process: The recording and editing of electronics on Juxtaposition took place in Radian's Vienna studio. The band collected and created recordings of different sound sources - mostly instruments like drums, bass, guitar vibraphone, and marimbaphone. They then recorded these instruments in unusual ways, 'microrecording' the sound sources through synthesizer patches. After recording and processing, Radian carefully arranged these electronics to work within their performances on live instruments, such as drums (Martin Brandlmayr), bass (John Norman) and synthesizers (Stefan Nemeth). Radian brought their complete electronic arrangement to Chicago’s Soma studios where John McEntire recorded the drums and bass. These parts were added to the electronics according to Radian’s arrangements.
