[music, albums]

On repeat tonight

I am bathing in I Believe in You from Talk Talk's splendid Spirit of Eden right now. This thread on ILM brought this album back to my mind. And there is another looong and instructive thread on Talk Talk.

How to describe this celestial music? A blend of lots of soundtrack, some symphony, a little progrock, a wee bit of jazz improvisation, a lot of blues and a voice (Mark Hollis) which would have annoyed me ten years ago but which does meld just perfectly with the mostly sparse and understated arrangements with so many instruments.

There is not a lot happening in the music, it is not for short time-span attentionists. I have listened to it a couple of times yesterday and today. It is nice background wallpaper music but it is even better when you really listen to it, when you pay attention to what's going on. My favourite instruments besides Mark Hollis' voice are the distorted harmonica and the percussion and the bass and and and. Just every bloody instrument. And the breaks, the pauses just before the waves continue to roll. There are also these violent non-expected eruptions like in Desire which make this album a soundtrack of real life.

This is one of the albums you should listen to on headphones and smoke a joint to. Though this is a contradiction. Joints are made to connect to people and not to disconnect from the world.

Sounds you can live without

My best friend is in hospital right now and shares a bedroom with two guys. Both of them snore. One has a very regular, hardly annoying snore, the other one often bursts out snuffling and makes it very hard for my friend to sleep. This bloke told my friend that he knew that he was snoring a little bit. But that he had never met anybody like the third guy who would snort like a pig and turn his nights into nightmares. My friend couldn't hold back from laughing so much that it was hurting.

There is nothing more musical than the human voice

Die Hinternet-Rezension von Tom Liwas Evolution Blues fängt so gut an, dass man sie eigentlich gar nicht mehr weiterlesen möchte, es kann fast nur noch bergab gehen (was es dann aber doch nicht tut):

Translation:

The beginning of the Hinternet review of Tom Liwa's Evolution Blues is so fabulous that you don't want to continue reading as it can only go down-hill (which it doesn't actually):

Tom Liwa's guitar must be very courageous. Never ever can it compete with the voice of its master. There is simply more music in Liwa's voice than in all the wonderful swinging wood arrangements of "Evolution Blues". This low-key, velvet voice outsings the whole band.

Dream on

Self-pity alarm!

Move With Me (shortly followed by Somedays and Red Paint) has always been my favourite song (yes I am such a simple mind) by Neneh Cherry and I have been always hoping to find the woman who would say to me:

Move with me I am strong enough to be weak in your arms

I am seriously beginning to doubt if this woman exists outside of my brain.
