[music, albums] December 1, 2004 at 9:05:00 PM CET Three albums I have listened to once and am definitely too harsh with ('cept the last) Giant Sand's latest It's All Over the Map may be his 37th(?) album. Maybe the 25th including the solo albums and the albums under a different monicker I got. Probably the last. As it is the same unfocussed hodgepodge mess between improv, desert rock and Howe as usual but without the inspiration. Convertino and Burns have left and Howe is with some Danish friends plus Vic Chesnutt, John Parish and who knows whom. I hope he hasn't lost it for good. The first Go-Betweens Send Me a Lullaby is not easy to get into neither. It has been re-released with a bonus disc. They haven't found their sound yet. I hear a band who has listened to the Talking Heads but is doing their own garage thing. Loveable dilettants. The new David Thomas & two pale boys 18 Monkeys on a Dead Man's Chest is killer. A voice from another galaxy. Hardly any drums. A trumpet in the distance. A slow motion descent into the darkness. Going where no-one has been before. To one of those places I am attracted to.

send me a wallaby The first two albums (and the Lost Album which shows a /much/ more embryonic band, especially since it's pre-Lindy, but let's not mention the war, eh?) are definitely a different kettle of fish to the later ones. The band sounds young and hungry, there's certainly some nice (if fairly derivative) bass work. How can you go past Eight Pictures? What a song! I sorta liked the new Giant Sand, too. It's a very lazy-sounding album, I guess. Good for weekend listening... ... link

i quite like the bonus cd of lullaby. they could have put it out as the main cd and i wouldn't have minded. and for giant sand. yes it surely is good. like all of his albums. i only listened to it once. which is not enough for mr. gelb. but still i have the feeling i have found a saturation point. it doesn't arrive to the hard rocking center of the universe and the elegic and beautiful chore of enchantment. ... link ... comment |
