[music, thoughts]

When listening to Spirit of Eden totally exhausted

last night I had this weird idea (on a kind of mortality again): Imagine you listen to some music you love and you know it will be the last time. The music will disappear, dissolve after your listen. The only way to conserve any lasting memory of the music would be to write about it. I think this should be the idea behind any decent music criticism. To try to create something which can maybe evoke the music you wrote about. Something which could stand for itself even if the music would be lost forever.

I haven't written a lot on music recently not because I didn't listen to any great music. It's more the opposite. I felt too insignificant to write about all those phantastic bands on my stereo. Talk Talk, Bark Psychosis, The Durutti Column, The Smiths, Kings of Convenience, Pale Saints to name a few. I am in the speechless and in awe state when it comes to music right now.

spirit of eden

always makes me cry. that record is just too beautiful to be real, somehow.

it's the only talk talk i own. as i always thought they were about pop in the beach boys sense before. and i never liked the bbs. which other album of theirs is worth a try? laughing stock or the colour of spring? ot the mark hollis solo? spirit of eden is so great because of the long pauses which give the music so much space.

I'd be happy to recommend The Colour Of Spring - not quite as "open-sounding" as Eden but a step in that direction. I think they've only just re-issued it on CD; my copy is on vinyl and it sounds fine! What little I've heard of the Hollis solo stuff sounds good - very spare, very spacy - but I haven't heard enough to really recommend it.

Funny, I just pulled out Spirit of Eden the other day and listened to it. Hard to get tired of music like that. The closest band I could compare later Talk Talk to would be The Blue Nile.

i have ordered the colour of spring a couple of days ago. seems the only one easily available via amazon.

blue nile on paper seem very good. i bought hats a while ago due to very positive reviews. i couldn't stand it at all. the voice really put me off. and it seemed all so hollow and vapid. maybe i should give it a try again. later talk talk play in a different league, imo.
