when i first saw the cover i thought it was a band called End and didn't realize until later that it was the new Eno album i was desperately looking for. ... link ... comment

Ha Ha Ha--I like that cover--it's very early 70s--kinda post-psychedelic and sort of a jab at the singer-songwriters who had to have a photo of themselves on every cover (a la James Taylor)--Eno has a photograph of himself instead of him being photographed..it's brilliant. He does look a bit like Nico in the photo--weird. ...And they would perform together a year later with Kevin Ayers and John Cale. ... link

Ok, that's irony then the thing with the framed photograph. Very clever. But it does not make the cover esthetically any more convincing or appealing. I mean this cover is bad taste per se. The blue coloured spikes, the other dry flowers, the roman vase, Eno's goth look on the photo, his name in poppy psychedelic colours, the playing card, the shelve on top with another frame. It's all too much. It does not become any better if Eno wanted it exactly like that. It even becomes worse the more thought out it turns out. But it is a very interesting cover to discuss about for sure. ... link

Ah well, I suppose one person's "bad taste" is another's "cool album cover"--I like it because it's striking, bad taste or not, it does grab your attention--even out of garden-variety curiosity..Eno definitely knew what he was doing--I mean, it's doesn't reach iconic status--like a "Dark Side Of The Moon" or "Led Zeppelin I" or even "Velvet Underground & Nico"--but it's an eye-grabber, for sure. ... link

the framed photograph just reminded me of mediterranean (?) graveyards where next to the tomb there is often a photograph of the deceased. in my protestant eyes a tasteless (morbid) habit as well. if you look at the playing card more closely (there is an enlargement on the back of the 4 page booklet) you see a gentleman holding up the dress of a woman who is crouching and pissing. haha. the warm jets. the other explanation of the warm jets brought forward by eno on his website concerns the tuned jet sound of the guitar on the title song. ... link

That's funny, I didn't know about that graveside/photo custom--hmmm..more significance for Eno to do that? ;-) Nah..prolly not. Yep..you got it..Eno said that that's what "here come the warm jets" means--a slang phrase for urinating..and the guitar sounds--they're so amazing. I bet an engineer in one of today's studios would still have a tough time replicating those sounds. Didja notice the pack of Camel cigarettes in the cover photo as well? He's a clever one, all right. ... link ... comment |
