A thread I just discovered over at ILM: 500 Greatest Extreme/Noise Albums Of All Time! They are at number 408 right now.

that was no. 90 in the thread above. i have never listened to it but according to what i heard about it is not as noisy as everybody thinks it is. it is processed guitar feedback but more of the droning kind with minimal changes in the noise patterns if i remember well. maybe annoying because of repetitiveness but not extremely loud noise.

sorry, but

it was much too noisy there to go down to no. 90

is this to say, then, that caspar brötzmann massaker doesn't count as noise?!

Still missing

John Zorn's "Kristallnacht", the only record I own with explicit warnings in its liner notes: »This segues into "Never Again," which, Zorn warns in the liner notes, "contains high frequency extremes at the limits of human hearing and beyond, which may cause nausea, headaches and ringing in the ears."« [cited from AMG]

problem is: you don't have to play records loud. so it's terribly easy not to get the intentions an artist might have had. once i attended a glenn branca concert. was one of the most terrifying, intense, whatever experiences i ever had. so loud that half of the audience was gone after the first chord. but: ten minutes into the show and you suddenly started to hear all the overtones these walls of sound and echos and recursions produced. never got them by listening to glenn branca recordings. the same with metal machine music: i was once read that he tried to use frequencies to make it unavoidable not to vomit or things like that. don't know if that's just folklore, but whenever i tried to reproduce the settings he might have had in mind, it did not work out. at least for my body.

interesting approach concerning the volume of the noise/music. whenever music is very loud it acts on my body. i feel my body vibrating. somehow loud music also fucks my ears. i hear sounds which are not there. like whistling for example. loud music is a drug which numbs my ears. and so in a way i'd think that loud noise obscures the noise part of the noise if you know what i mean. and i therefore have the feeling that it is your imagination that you hear those echoes etc. that those echoes are maybe echoes in your ear? or if not that it is the live setting which makes the difference. listening to a noise record several times becomes very boring. there is no thrill anymore if you know where the noise is going.

metal machine music is not dissonant noise. in this thread there are even people referring to it as pretty. it's boring but not shocking for the ears. and it probably wasn't even twenty-five years ago when human ears were not as used to noise as today.

an extensive essay by mark sinker: the noise piece.

and another instructive thread on noise: NOISE: How much is too much?
