[journal] November 3, 2006 at 12:39:00 AM CET It is weird. Every time I am in a church (usually attending a service) my thoughts wander. I have so many ideas which are catalysed by the sermon but which have hardly anything to do with it. And these ideas queue up in my mind and they are lost if I don't write them down. I only listen subconsciously to the words, I think it is the atmosphere which stimulates my thinking. Tonight we went to see Lambchop in the Dreikönigskirche, a Protestant church in Sachsenhausen which has discovered rock concerts as an income source (we saw the Cowboy Junkies there before). And it was the same thing. Lambchop started with lame new songs. Annoying string-drenched (the DAFO string orchestra again) uninspired stuff. The thing about bands which you loved in the beginning and which didn't evolve and became clichés of themselves. Then they played the older songs where there were no strings or where they were only used as a raffinement, as a parfum. I liked them but not as much as in the earlier concerts. The other thing about bands which have become too successful (with audiences too big excluding a familiarity) to love them any more. And it triggered a cascade of thoughts in my brain. All of which were rather mundane and nothing special. The most exciting one was about being in a church and thinking about things which are totally opposite to what the pastor preaches. Or more precise which use the sermon as input and produce an output which is not the one the church and the pastor have intended. Does this make any sense? |
