i'm assuming the vu live is the double lp?? if so then that's my choice but it's a hard one again. here's some others i liked from that year :
The Band - s/t : their only great album Amon Duul II - Phallus Dei : psych rock at it's best Kevin Ayers - Joy Of A Toy : psych pop at it's best Dick Hyman - Moog Electric Eclectics of Dick Hyman : stupid but tasty Nico - Marble Index : all harmonium fest Linda Perhacs - Parallelograms : not as great as it's supposed to be Rolling Stones - Let It Bleed : they invented rock Soft Machine - Volume 2 : badly recorded but easily their best material 5th Dimension - Age of Aquarius : my lounge love shinging through Tim Buckley - Blue Afternoon : sad and contemplative Holger Czukay - Canaxis : a wonderfull experiment Fairport Convention - Unhalfbricking : offbeat but enticing Judy Henske and Jerry Yester - Farewell Aldebran : sigh... more great folk Sergio Mendes and Brazil '66 - Ye Me Le : an undiscovered classic Pentangle - Basket Of Light : hey, more folk Sly and the Family Stone - Stand! : the only one of theirs i really like Stooges - Stooges : some great tracks but not as perfect as they later became Syd Barrett - Madcap Laughs : hard to listen to completely but full of strangeness David Crosby - If I Could Only Remember My Name : even more folk but with a loosness that can only come with drugs Donovan - Barabajagal : cripe - more folk pop It's A Beautiful Day - It's A Beautiful Day : the best of the west coast psychedelic bands

you are right about the vu, phil. it is the double lp/cd with the bum of a girl on the cover. on my issue it says "live with lou reed". there may be other names though.
i am having a hard time in choosing. i thought that one album was my pick but now there is another one almost as good or even better. i guess i will try a track-by-track match.
thanks for the recommendations. marble index and the madcap laughs are indeed both very hard to listen to from start to end. i am astonished that you didn't mention trout mask replica. i left it out of the poll as i never got it.

really love that VU album no matter that white light/white heat os probably more iconic (and has john cale).
trout mask - i had that as 1970 but 69 is right. still and all, it's one of those that I admire but not really love.
