Der Apfel fällt nicht weit vom Stamm

Robert Wyatt Ellidge in the sleeve notes to Flotsam Jetsam:

... I was conceived and dropped only just after the atom bomb, ...

He was totally unreasonable, and would never argue. His attitude seemed to be, "I'll give you my opinion if you want it, but that doesn't mean I'd like to hear yours."

He avoided the non-smoking compartments in trains, which he said smelt of urine. ...

I am a shadow of his former self, and I miss him more than I know how to say. So this one's for George Hargreaves Ellidge, musician, soldier, psychologist and complete nut - case.

Obscenity

From the Wikipedia entry on Bill Gates:

According to one estimate, Gates possesses more wealth than the poorest 50 percent of the world's population.

P.S. And how did he become the richest man in the world? From the same article:

In the early 1970s, Gates wrote the Open Letter to Hobbyists, which shocked the computer hobbyist community by insisting that a commercial market existed for computer software and that such software should not be freely copied without the publisher's permission. At the time, the community was strongly influenced by its ham radio legacy and the related Hacker ethic, which insist that innovations and knowledge should be freely shared in the community.

So what's happening now with Linux and other open source software taking away market shares from Microsoft is in a way the revenge of the community.

Robert Wyatt - Alliance

There is a kind of compromise you are master of

Your endless gentle nudging left us polarised

It's hard to talk to enemies We are enemies

What we had in common makes it even worse

You're proud of being middle class (meaning upper class)

You say you're self sufficient (but you don't dig your own coal)

I think that what you're frightened of more than anything

is knowing you need workers more than they need you

"A herd of independent minds" Chomsky got it right

is jogging into battle waving old school ties

Mix tapes of indie bands

Over at chill (danke Tom) I found a link to the Noisepop Mix Tape. Each month Noisepop asks musicians what they listen to. Up to now there are mix tapes online of Oranger, Beulah, Dealership, Whysall Lane, Tussle, The Stratford 4, Creeper Lagoon and John Vanderslice. Artists I have hardly ever heard anything of. The tape of The Stratford 4 (May) could have been a tape of mine. The playlist (all songs can be streamed with Realaudio):

  • Smashing Pumpkins - Rhinoceros
  • Psychedelic Furs - All That Money Wants
  • Spiritualized - Shine a Light
  • Velvet Underground - Pale Blue Eyes
  • Fugazi - Suggestion
  • Sonic Youth - Sugar Kane
  • Elastica - Annie
  • My Bloody Valentine - Only Shallow
  • Mogwai - Stanley Kubrick
  • Love - Alone Again Or

P.S. It's not really surprising that I like the two tracks by The Stratford 4 which are on the site as well. Noisy pop psychedelia. And yes there is surely a huge Yo La Tengo influence too. So this mix tape idea is an excellent way to discover new bands. Creeper Lagoon also seem to have a taste quite close to mine.

Östro 430 - Sei lieb

Schwuchtzeln. Hab ich schon mal gesagt.

Song: Erst machst du mich so tierisch an. Und nachher lässt du mich nicht ran. Ich sitze hier auf heißen Kohlen. Dann bleib mir lieber gleich gestohlen. Du findest das wohl auch noch lustig. Und lachst dich halbplatt. Ich find das gar nicht putzig. Du bist gemein, du Sack.

Refrain: Ich kann mich kaum noch berappeln. Und du Arsch, du lässt mich zappeln. Ich hab doch so nen Trieb. Nun sei doch endlich lieb.

Meine Hose ist klatschnass. Und dir Schwein dir macht das Spaß. Kannst du mir sagen was das soll? Deine Tour macht mich toll.

Du brauchst das wohl für dein Ego. Dass ne Alte an dir hängt. Geh doch nach Haus und spiel mit Lego. Wenn dir spielen so gefällt.

Refrain

Jetzt lass mich doch an deinen Schwanz.

Refrain (x2)
