carla bley, new york 1968-71

listened to the first disc of escalator today. against all odds i enjoyed it. usually i fervently dislike classical operas, musicals and rock operas in an ascending order. there is broadway and there is rock in this but i suppose the free jazz component saves it for me. all that brass. pieces with six different kinds of them: trombone, trumpet, french horn, bass trombone, tuba and tenor sax (made of brass but a woodwind instrument!). all those old acquaintances. john mclaughlin, gato barbieri, charlie haden, paul motian, jack bruce, don cherry, linda ronstadt etc. gato's tenor sax sounding like someone screaming for his life. the second hour is for tomorrow night.

jazz as i like it

i just listened to paul bley for the first time in my life. homage to carla from 1992. and i am flabbergasted. if this had been a blindtest i'd have said it is an unreleased recording by keith jarrett. from the 70s when jarrett was solo. the same lyricism, the same kind of restraint, the same flow but without the melodic transcendental climaxes. paul was on ecm as well in the early 70s.

i am going to explore the annette peacock (wonderful reissue my mama never taught me how to cook), gary peacock, paul bley, clara bley complex further on. next album i ordered: carla bley's jazz opera thing escalator from over the hill. funny that there are quite a lot of paul bley/gary peacock collaborations, the last one from 2001 even called annette. i mean both of them were married to her. not sure if she is still married to paul gary but i doubt it.

gary peacock has been keith jarrett's bassist for the last 20 years or so by the way.

Music is sound

Chris Watson, who's featured in an Invisible Jukebox in the September issue of The Wire, was one of the three original members of Cabaret Voltaire. He left in 1981 to work on sound for television and radio, specialising in field recordings of birds, mammals and insects. Even while working on mainstream BBC TV series with David Attenborough he continued to make more experimental tape collages with Andrew Mackenzie of The Hafler Trio. He's released three solo albums of wildlife sounds on the Touch label and currently has a sound installation featuring the sounds of Mexican railways running in Mexico City.

[it's the economy, stupid]

Exploiting the impossibility of equilibrium

The computer crashes so regularly, taking with it all the work since the last crash, that I have to find a way of reminding myself to save all the time. I do this by balancing a book on my head while I'm working. It falls off so often that I remember to save. Interesting spin-off - in order to keep the book there at all I have to sit well, and move my eyes more than my head. Now I'm starting to think this is the way to always use a computer.

Billie Holiday - Comes Love

Comes rain, put your rubber on your feet Comes a snow, you can get a little heat Comes love, nothing can be done

Comes a fire, you know what to do Blow a tyre, buy another shoe Comes love, nothing can be done

Don't try hiding, cause there isn't any use You start sliding when your heart turns on the juice Comes a headache, you can lose it in a day Comes a toothache, see your dentist right away Comes love, nothing can be done

Comes a heatwave, you can hurry to the shore Comes the ...., you can hide behind the door Comes love, nothing can be done

Comes the measels... Comes love, nothing can be done That all brother, if you've ever been in love That all brother, you know what I'm speaking of Comes a nightmare, you can always stay awake Comes depression, you may get another break Comes love, nothing can be done

Mp3 notes

  • The Durutti Column mp3s will be online for one week.
  • They are of a poor FM quality (64 kbit/s).
  • If you like them you can purchase the CDs e.g. at Amazon. The reissues are quite expensive (16 euros in Germany) but they are definitely worth it.
