Teenage kicks

Something I wanted to say to him because without his voice, his taste, and his curiosity, I would never have discovered the music I discovered, and developed such a love for the strange, the dark and the beautiful.

He was such a down to earth man, so of the moment, there was never the time, and, anyway, he would be embarrassed.

I just always thought there was plenty of time. I would get round to it one day.

Well, as a kind of dour, cosmic joke he might almost have appreciated, it turns out there is no time, there is no one day. I have to take this opportunity to write those words that I wanted to say to his face.

Paul Morley about John Peel who died of a heart attack on holiday in Cuczo, Peru yesterday.

Food for the ear

Stina Nordenstam, my favourite voice from Scandinavia (Rickie Lee Jones on sleeping pills), has a new album out. Stream The World Is Saved here (via this informative ILM thread).

Jandek, the Thomas Pynchon of rock music, has played on the Instal festival in Glasgow. His first live ever? Here are 8 tracks of his proto-blues. His singing to me is an acquired taste to say the least. But there is something about his naive approach to music somewhere between the Shaggs and Captain Beefheart.

Music is sound

Chris Watson, who's featured in an Invisible Jukebox in the September issue of The Wire, was one of the three original members of Cabaret Voltaire. He left in 1981 to work on sound for television and radio, specialising in field recordings of birds, mammals and insects. Even while working on mainstream BBC TV series with David Attenborough he continued to make more experimental tape collages with Andrew Mackenzie of The Hafler Trio. He's released three solo albums of wildlife sounds on the Touch label and currently has a sound installation featuring the sounds of Mexican railways running in Mexico City.

Can't Get Enough

A couple of albums I couldn't resist to start downloading this afternoon (via brian's radio blog):

There is also the new Kings of Convenience and the first Nick Drake. Too much good music to listen to in one afternoon.

Please go over to Spoilt Victorian Child for some Joy Division goodness. A great Galaxie 500 cover of Ceremony amongst others.

Nick Drake

Two links:

  • Hazey Jane Talks to The Pinefox, a long ILM thread from April I missed out on. The Pinefox starts asking an obvious question on the sequencing of the two songs called Hazey Jane II and I on Bryter Later and the discussion slowly moves towards more excitng things.
  • Stranger to the world, an article by Peter Paphides in the Observer which I haven't read yet. Apparently (not really surprising) it is extremely sad.
