If you like spacy, lyrical music, Fred has something for you. A beauty of another time and space. A trumpet I'd take over almost anything Miles Davis has done on that instrument.

How easy was it to set up your imprints Eskaton and Threshold House, and how easy is it to run?

Easy in so far as we don't really do anything, which is not that good for the artists concerned! Tips on running a label? Don't set one up. Instead set up a website which just recommends or introduces interesting artists or people to one another. All artists have to learn how to set up their own paid-download sites. If they leave it to labels they'll just go on getting ripped off for ANOTHER 50 years...Links and recommendations are the only things that matter now.

Sleazy from Coil/Psychic TV/Throbbing Gristle in an old Stylus Mag interview (check also this illuminating almost one hour long audio interview)

Late to the party as usual

I just noticed that Fred Solinger, another old school music blogger, has been posting audio files on vain, selfish and lazy for about four months now. He accompanies the one or two daily songs with insightful commentary with a very individual touch. Reading what he has to say about the mainly new music usually makes me curious about it and I then download the tracks from bands I sometimes have never heard of. Concerning the posts of the last week (he uses yousendit where links expire after seven days) I was rarely disappointed of what I heard and enjoyed the music even more when rereading his witty synesthetic reviews. His taste covers quite a wide spectrum with a predilection for well-crafted pop and rock. Recent posts with mp3 links still online were on Liars, John Lennon, The Spinto Band, Freddie Scott, Mystery Jets, Leonard Cohen, Franz Ferdinand, Low, The Strokes.

Fripp/Eno chez Peel, November 1973

The money on the table is that this "session" never existed and that John Peel was in on the joke. Apparently, someone thought it would be a lark to just reverse the flow of the No Pussyfooting album and have Peel introduce them as the "tracks" from the said album. Some Eno fans swear that this session was just the LP played backwards. If that's true it's still worth listening as Eno and Fripp were trying to get the three-minute pop music fan to think deeper into sound and the ambience it created. It takes an open mind to allow for such experiments on national radio. You just won't hear anything like this today. There's still NOTHING ON THE RADIO.

Download link via kingblind. I think they have reversed the tracks. Swastika Girls is #1 and the other, slightly longer one is #2. That would make sense if No Pussyfooting was only played backwards, wouldn't it? I don't know N.P. but this is quite nice actually.

Blo.gs has disabled searching for a while, Helma doesn't like the xml. Therefore a direct link here for In League With Paton. A very well written music blog with recent posts on the latest John Cale, some Animal Collective, a new film from Mike Leigh and so on. Very British as we like it around here.

Two phantastic calm and moody pieces over at Xanax Taxi, my fave mp3 blog for jazz vibes:

  • The 1st track Silence, the swan song of the Keith Jarrett Quartet with Redman on tenor sax, Haden on bass and Motian on drums. Touchingly sad esp. the sax line.

  • The last track She Has Four Thorns by saxophonist Chris Speed whom I had never heard of a minute ago. He is accompanied by Cuong Vu on trumpet, Rob Burger on accordion, Skuli Sverrisson on bass and Jim Black on percussion. The wistful accordion together with the sax and trumpet which create the foggy notion make this a wonderful impressionist piece.
