[music, links] December 2, 2004 at 8:56:00 PM CET Go away you know it's good for you Silence is a rhythm two has three Magazine songs online. The first two tracks are great energetic post-punk with a penchant for melody by Howard Devoto (former Buzzcocks singer) and mates. There is a dramatic dark vibe to his voice which sometimes reminds me of Van Der Graaf Generator's Peter Hammill. The two Swell Maps tracks from an older entry are indeed sounding like Buzzcocks in a box of frogs. Music is a Virus shares Woolie Bullie by Pere Ubu and ponders about geography and personal relocation plans. The music is intense droney stuff with the fabulous lines Geography is a language they can't screw up.
The land & what we add to it cannot lie.
It's also like a mirror.
Reflected we see ourselves or we choose to turn away.
I think I have to dig deeper into this band. It's a good sign if I still contradict myself on a daily base.

Sit, Ubu, sit. I always felt ambivalent about Pere Ubu too - but they've been going so long (on and off, and so many different lineups) that it's hard to keep up with them. The first album, The Modern Dance, is absolutely essential, and there was also an EP called Datapanik In The Year Zero that I think is included on a compilation called Terminal Drive (could be wrong about the title, but I haven't got time to research links). Magazine, of course, were fantastic. Good to see (via the posts at Silence Is A Rhythm) that people today still pick up on them. I always thought of them as the new wave's answer to prog-rock. ... link

new wave's answer to prog-rock i like that idea. isn't goth rock the 80s answer to prog rock? at least howard devoto's voice is pretty grave. bauhaus are looming somewhere in the background. genesis, pink floyd and king crimson (later) were my triumvirate of 70s prog. i loved them to pieces. i can hardly listen to them today. it's all so over the top. so bombastic. so dead serious. ... link

Hmmm... Interesting - I would't quite have have put Magazine in the Goth category, though they were definitely an influence. But just listen to an album like Secondhand Daylight to hear that big, almost arctic sound. A track like Back To Nature is almost like Yes. I was once a big prog fan, and I see what you mean. A lot of it is still great music but if you were a member of A Certain Generation, it lost a lot of relevance once punk and new wave came out. I was worse - I used to be a big fan of Emerson Lake & Palmer. The shame! ... link ... comment |
