other choices i voted for nirvana because it's the only one of theirs i can really stand. i know it's ridiculous to offer other choices 'cause you've got yur own brain but here's my favs from that year: Tori Amos Under The Pink Beck Mellow Gold (his very best) Gavin Bryars Sinking of the Titanic (french release, very atmospheric) High Llamas Gideon Gaye (not their best but still good) Massive Attack Protection (easily their most moving) The Necks Aquatic (gorgeous) Liz Phair Whip-Smart (better than her 1st) Elliott Smith Roman Candle (the start of a great run) Stereolab Mars Audiac Quintet (at their most NEU!) ... link

thanks for the alternatives. i don't know all of them but i doubt any of them would be close to being my fave of 1994. btw i am still not 100% sure of my fave but it probably is the same one you chose. protection was the 1st massive attack i got to know and i loved it at the time but can't bear to listen to it anymore. i remember mellow gold as slightly over-hyped. it didn't make a lasting impression on me. i prefer his songwriter album mutations. i never liked liz phair. to me she seemed a pale copy-cat of pj harvey. the 1st album was very disappointing. i don't even know if i have the second, i guess yes. it may well be better than the 1st but that doesn't mean much. i stopped buying stereolab albums in 1994 i think. i loved the early stuff but when they started with soundtracks and "world" music i lost them. the early records like peng! are very neu! as well. and velvet undergroundish. concerning high llamas i only own hawaii which i love but only listen to rarely as it is such a lush and sugar-sweet album. p.s. i forgot tori amos. i have that album but i think i developed an allergy against her voice. not sure. maybe i should try listening to her again. or liz phair. yes, i think liz phair. whip-smart. now. ... link

whip-smart is quite good, you are right. except the 1st track which is pretty boring. i don't know why i always associate phair with pj harvey. they have totally different styles. pj harvey is much more dynamic and urgent, liz phair is more relaxed and laid-down. maybe as they are both kind of riot-girls. ... link
