[philosophy] January 26, 2003 at 9:13:00 AM CET A monster clone (via arts & letters daily) I don't know Houellebecq personally and I don't really want to but after such a statement I can't refrain from hating him. No. I exaggerate. It is more that I am nauseated. And that I feel extremely sorry for him. It also bothers me that what he writes here seems as honest as e.g. Rousseau in his Confessions but at the same time he lives on creating scandals with exactly this kind of confessional writing. And he lives quite well according to the sales of his books. Of course there is also the possibility that Houellebecq makes all this up. I don't believe that but I wouldn't like him more if this was the truth. On the other hand there is something fascinating about Houellebecq. Something irresistible. I feel like a moth flying into the flame when I read his texts. This small essay on cloning reminds me of the dilemma of the scientists who developed the atomic bomb which was so well described by Dürrenmatt in Die Physiker and which can be condensed into two sentences: Alles Denkbare wird einmal gedacht. (Everything which is thinkable/conceivable will be thought/conceived one day.)
and Was einmal gedacht wurde, kann nicht mehr zurückgenommen werden. (That which has been thought/conceived once cannot be reversed.)

Re: A monster clone I do believe Houellbecq is an imposter. I do not think he's such a great writer, as som many seem to claim. I Just think he is an exceptionally clever man, who has the capacity to know what will be seen as hugely controversial here in France. And as we all know, controversy sells. This man knew, when saying in an interview last year that Islam was "one of the dumbest religion he knew of", that it would create a scandal. It didn't stop him. His writing style is too easy in my eyes. Just one of these 'new reactionnaires' writers who seem to be so popular in Frace right now. (i.e haters of the 60's movement, often bourgeois, which have quite a questionnable sense of reality). ... link

Re: Re: A monster clone You are probably right. Houellebecq is an imposter. His success is based on provocation. Though I still think that his writing is not totally fictional. It is also true that his style is not too elaborate. That he is quite easy to read. I can read him in French without problems. But I feel that this is not a valid argument against the quality of his writing. L'Etranger de Camus is very simple too but it still is one of the most impressive books of all-time. Houellebecq's writing is not about style. The style is quite irrelevant. I think another reason for his success is that he raises modern issues which concern many people. His ideas and evaluations are often not politically correct but he seems to be sincere in a way and many people think like him but would not dare to utter these thoughts. ... link ... comment |
