sigh gone for goo - or for the one great track they ever made, really. 1990 was the absolute nadir of my interest in music. even after all this time i still only have 2 others to mention : the La's and the Loop Orchestra's Suspense. both heard in recent years, mind you. oh, i forgot about 'reading writing arithmetic' by the sundays - now THAT'S a great record. ... link

funny i started getting into indie music in 1990. the cd buying craze began. that sundays album never really did it for me. i didn't listen often to it, i only have it on tape. the sundays have got something staid about them. sunday afternoon student music. ... link

transition The year I left my parent's house and started a new life in a new town. I listened to that Chills record a lot that year, still my favorite as a whole by them. It's a bit overtly romantic maybe, but the tunes are so gorgeous it still moves me when I play it. Wonderful artwork, too. Swagger really swaggers, doesn't it? Like Submarine Bells, my introduction to a band. I love the way most of the songs segue into each other, in particular the transition from "Weightless" into "...And Stones". "What it is" , "Anti-pretty": an album without filler. Bossanova, the Pixies at their most "mature"? Whatever that means. They sound really focussed, knowing exactly what they are doing. Their most accomplished effort, I think. Their most polished surely, but somehow I prefer them without that sandpaper finish. Songs for Drella. I just bought this on cd last week, have had it on tape since it came out but hadn't heard it in 10 years I think. An album you shouldn't play too often, I feel. Still great, though. Goo sounded so rigid when I first heard it. Haven't heard it since, I think. My favorite album from that year is the Breeders Pod: tight, rugged yet extremely elegant. Others I enjoyed: Dead Moon - Thirteen Off My Hook; Mark Lanegan - The Winding Sheet; My Bloody Valentine - Loveless (surprised you left that one out); the La's; Thin White Rope - Sack Full of Silver and another that I learned about a lot later: Loop - A Gilded Eternity. ... link

loveless was from 1991, willem. you didn't vote? swagger and bossanova were my first two indie records. a friend bought them for me for my 28th anniversary. i really loved swagger and the blue aeroplanes in general at the time. it's a perfect album as you said, really setting up a certain relaxed late evening mood. bossanova i quite liked too. sunny surf pop. submarine bells i haven't listened to for a long time. but i think i still like their early singles most. those irresistibe innocent simple tunes. ... link

@willem yes, you are right about pod, i forgot it as i had filed it under 1992 in my database. an excellent understated album, i probably prefer it to the shining the last splash. i also forgot fakebook, yo la tengo's lovely cover album. i agree about what you said about songs for drella. it's a memorial album for andy warhol who died too early. most songs have something extremely artificial about them but it still has its moments. goo is sonic youth at their most accessible, closest to normal rock. a fine album but there is something missing. fortunately i still can choose sister and/or dirty as 1987 and 1992 haven't been covered yet. i have to go for one sonic youth album, that's for sure. ... link ... comment |
