i think it's time for the VU to take their place in the pantheon of greatness that is "40 years, 40 albums" (if they aren't already). by jingo, i know every single note and piece of distortion of WLWH. and all of it is good. better than all the musics of the world. ... link ... comment

Phil's right, the VU album pretty much blows the others away. But, it must be said, the above list is pretty faultless, at least judging by the albums I know. A while ago I heard an outtake of that Simon & Garfunkel album which gave me the impression they were smoking quite a lot of green stuff when they recorded it, hilarious stuff. So checking that album out is still on my to-do-list. As is checking out Astral Weeks, something I somehow keep postponing so it will probably never happen. A huge personal favorite from that year is Music from Big Pink by the Band, an album my parents had on heavy rotation during my childhood years. I rediscovered it a few years ago, it was overwhelming in such a great way (I could still hum along to all the songs). Another (canonical) '68 classic I discovered quite recently is Forever Changes by Love. It totally lived up to its reputation the first time I heard it (I was quite drunk). ... link

yes, it's another pretty great year all told. i sold ...big pink 'cause i only liked one song. the s/t 2nd album is just wonderfull, though. others: the beatles (you know you love it) can - moster movie (for yoo doo right alone) johnny cash - at folsom prison (incendiary) dylan and the band - basement tapes (monumental if a little underdone) family - music in a dolls house (best psych record not owned by everyone who likes psych) kinks - village green... (tasty) mendes / brasil 66 - look around (fab) terry riley - poppy nogood (smokin') rolling stones - beggars banquet (rowdy) dusty springfield - in memphis (soul brother #1) the united states of america - s/t (2nd best psych record not owned by everyone who likes psych) ... link

i only have a very slow, not very trustworthy connection where i am right now, just a couple of words. i already covered vu with their 1st album from 1967. right now i am more inclined to choose the beatles double album but i'll listen to wlwh again. forever changes was from 1967 i think (at least i had it in that poll). a couple of great westcoast psychedelia but on the whole lacking in the consistency department, i think. don't know what to say about the others, i only have the johnny cash which is not really my cup of tea (country stays country). and the stones (probably my fave by them, great hellish vibe) of course but it was up in the poll. ... link ... comment

I know it's late but... ...I had to put in my spake for Beggar's Banquet. I love practically every album on this list, though I'm not as familiar as I should be with the Red Krayola. PS Alex - I am now officially looking for the limited edition mono mix of Beggar's Banquet too - my MiniDisc player just ate it. But that mono mix has to be heard to be believed; like I said before it's actually superior to the stereo version. ... link

Sounds good, is that monomix only available as the original vinyl release or is there a reissue cd-version that contains the album in mono? ... link

i don't really know the red crayola album myself. i was listening to about three songs of kick out the jams and one minute of the red crayola album and i felt that the mc5 don't do it for me. whereas the red crayola had something about them. i have to listen to the whole thing to find out exactly what. i also listened to beggar's banquet on the real stereo in the living-room (where we don't smoke) and it sounded absolutely phantastic (the stereo version). what a crazy shambolic shaman record. how i love that jigsaw puzzle. that record is exactly at the verge of blues and rock. taking the best of the two worlds. the stones were at their summit when they did that album. but still my favourite of 68 will be that other album by a not so small british band. ... link ... comment |
