Why be sorry... .. when the result is so obvious? If it were possible to cheat, I would vote five more times for the mighty Tindersticks. (I'd vote for Stereolab except a) it's a hard choice between the 2 albums, and b) I didn't really get into them for another year or two anyway.) NB. The Trashcan Sinatras were playing in the local a week or so ago. Didn't know they were still around. ... link

apparently the others don't think it is so obvious. but of course you are absolutely right. there is only that phantastic album that can win. that's what i think right now at least. another debut. i think i prefer most bands debuts to the rest of their output. especially if they have a very personal style or schtick. after the stunning debut the tindersticks got so boring and predictable. they should have disbanded after the second album which still has some good stuff on it. when they tried to make soul music they completely lost me. i don't know which stereolab album is better neither. that's why i put both. i loved the early stereolab. integrating vu's indierock and neu!'s motorik with this gorgeous sexy french voice. but i got bored quite soon too. they must have released three albums per year or something in the beginnings. i think the trashcan sinatras reunited recently. the new stuff i heard didn't do it for me. ... link ... comment

i think you've basically covered the field here. i finally decided on stereolab even though i don't think it's their best album by any means. could easily have chosen breeders, though. ones i liked not on your list include: seefeel - quique (still got to do a seefeel blog entry) bjork - debut jane siberry - when i was a boy (probably my favourite) komeda - pop pa svenska liz phair - exile in guyville (not that it's her best either) ... link
