this was an easy one for me - i only own 2 of these and am not really fond of one of them. ofcourse, to my mind, as always, there were rather large numbers of better things released in this tumultuous year including the following: Ben Folds Five - Whatever and Ever Amen : easily their best High Llamas, The - Cold and Bouncy : better tunes than previously + more electronics Radiohead - OK Computer : a classic Belle and Sebastian - If You're Feeling Sinister : another indie classic Biosphere - Substrata : deep, deep ambient DJ Shadow - Endtroducing : his only great release Eno, Brian - Drop, The : much maligned but still quite lovely if you're in the mood Harris, Emmylou - Wrecking Ball : a great reinvention O'Rourke, Jim - Happy Days : 2 notes then some fingerpickin' then blasts of drone etc Smith, Elliot - either/or : maybe his finest moment Supergrass - In It For the Money : much better than their first Taylor, Lewis - Lewis Taylor : stone cold indie soul Bowie, David - Earthling : another much maligned release but i really love it Ivy - Apartment Life : all the good bits of the Fountains of Wayne without all the bad bits + a cheesy french singer Moore, Abra - Strangest Places : new c&w with great production and excellent songs ... link

thanks for your list. 1997 is a strange year. there are lots of good releases but nothing which is really standing out. i would have put the belle and sebastian here and it would have had a good chance to win if i hadn' read that it was released on jeepster in the uk in nov. 96. the only other album on your list i own is the david bowie. i listened to it maybe twice. it was ok if i remember well. radohead i find terribly overrated before amnesiac. i am intrigued by the biosphere and the o'rourke albums. elliott smith i somehow never got into as i wrote before. though i love his music in theory. dj shadow i heard of but never listened to. supergrass remind me too much of britpop which i abhorred at the time (except some blur). the eno i have never heard of. i have only one high llamas, hawaii, i wrote about it before. i like to bath in its lush pop arrangements occasionally but i feel one high llamas album is enough for me. which is the 2nd album from my list after the dylan which you own but don't care about too much? the robert wyatt? i am struggling between choosing op8 or wyatt at the moment. yo la tengo is 3rd. all three are very sound albums with hardly any filler. ... link

weird. claustrophobic is an epithet i'd associate with joy division but never with yo la tengo. do you think of it because of the stockholm song? i think i have to relisten to the album with this association in mind. or maybe i shouldn't. it is definitely not their best but it is still lovely. ... link ... comment |
