[music, albums] January 8, 2003 at 5:48:54 PM CET Disappointing The new Yo La Tengo EP with four versions of an obscure Sun Ra song called Nuclear War is the weakest music I have ever heard of one of my favourite bands. The interpretation is mainly drum patterns plus spoken political lyrics which I wouldn't exactly call subtle. It was probably fun for the kids to repeat "it's a motherfucker" for a zillion times but I find this dull and annoying. Version #2 with the kids is the best one nevertheless. Why is it so difficult to make political statements in rock music without sacrificing the art? From the esthetic point of view this reminds me very much of socialist realism. Just plain boring. Monotonous. Though the political intentions seem to be good. Georgia, Ira and James, more music and less politics in the future, please. Somewhere else:

Re: Disappointing I think one of the versions shpould be given a chance played loud and late. i can imagine it would work fine, for a while. just like socialist realism. but you are right, compared to earlier music from hoboken its...hmmm...uninspired. ... link ... comment

Re: Disappointing haven't heard the EP. but it was a similar experience in concert. that said, I think it's cool theyre trying a political thing. I wish more music types would get some balls and make a political statement. a la Desapacidos (sp?) -- which I think is quite excellent. but....the Nuclear War cover art, you must admit, is quite excellent. Re: Disappointing ... Poignancy aside, the single does dull the senses with its uncanny ability to become increasingly repetitive. Four distinct versions mark the single, and it's difficult to cross the finish line of one track knowing that ahead lies more of the same. The disc opens with the band chanting the song's mutating refrain for nearly eight minutes, accompanied by nothing more than tribal percussion. Sun Ra achieved an eeriness by only coolly stating the obvious, and with his relaxed delivery, he created an uneasy, irresistible tension. Yo La Tengo, however, have greatly accelerated the song itself, and stripped it of its fun. On the opening track, they seem almost to be pleading for the message to be heard, and their somewhat morose delivery dilutes its power...
