[music, artists] July 28, 2004 at 9:58:00 PM CEST Cluster were one of the ground breaking electronic bands from Germany at the beginning of the 70s. Other notable teutonic groups from this time are Neu!, Faust and Tangerine Dream (please forget the mostly awful Kraftwerk). As TD Cluster came from Berlin: graphics student and barkeeper Dieter Moebius and musical autodidact Hans-Joachim Roedelius who had been in the East German army NVA and had deserted from it. Their music was instrumental, kind of meditative or cosmic, foreshadowing Eno's ambient music with early synthesizers. I assembled a couple of tracks I found on WFMU with the correct real audio entry points. Here they are (release years, album titles and lengths in brackets):

i think harmonium (cluster + michael rother) are actually better. faust link : www.faust-pages.com. and, kraftwerk: easily some of the best electronic music around. ... link

i don't know anything by harmonium. wfmu has aired some tracks, i'll check them out. i like the cluster stuff. it's on the verge of wallpaper music but it is still on the good side. kraftwerk have never been my cup of tea. autobahn and radio-activity i really found dumb and annoying in the 70s. the song the model was ace but it came out later, didn't it? what would be the one kraftwerk album to get? by the way i never liked can neither. too arty, too artificial or something. ... link

harmonium's 2 albums are, i think, due to be re-released after years of neglect. i only have vinyl -> cassette -> cd-r copies myself and even then they sound great. tougher than cluster and with more interesting melodies. eno met with them and did a few jams which were released a while ago and, basically, all his stuff - AGW onwards - was heavily influenced by them. kraftwerk - i know how they could annoy but they still sound masterfull to me. ... link ... comment |
