[music, songs] January 11, 2004 at 7:21:00 PM CET Hidden Cameras - Boys of Melody Mp3 (live at Ted's Wrecking Yard 2002) and lyrics. This is one of the songs which you think you have heard before when you listen to it for the first time. It's an infectious irresistible tune sung by Joel Gibb, the leader of the Hidden Cameras from Toronto. Gibb's voice is rather high-pitch in the same vein as Jimmy Somerville from Bronski Beat or the Gibb brothers from the Bee Gees. It is full of soul and melody. The guitars, keyboards, drums and the xylophone are just providing the perfect rhythmic bed for this incredibly beautiful voice blossoming like a rose in winter. P.S. Thank you for making me discover this, koalarama. P.P.S. Over at Said the Gramophone there is another (slightly overproduced) version of this song and Sean wrote about it and a concert he attended.

i would not agree to the somerville/bee gees comparison, joel gibbs voice is more warm and smooth, but i am glad you like it. 10 great popsongs, all hits. die beste kritik die ich finden konnte, war aus der konkret von martin büsser aber leider nicht online zu haben. ... link

difficult to find the closest voice to joel gibbs in pop history. but in this live version of "boys of melody" the way he uses his voice especially at the end where it goes up and up is not too far from somerville i find. it is definitely not like morrissey's and even less like the guy from belle and sebastian. there is something extremely touching about it. there is absolutely no mannerism. he is embracing the melody with his voice. he is delivering himself. the whole song is his voice actually. i also streamed the concert at justconcerts and the version he sings there was significantly inferior. overall i found the concert rather disappointing (except "miracle"). ... link

if you ever get the chance, go see them live. i saw them last year and it was awesome. about 7 people on stage (although that is prone to vary, i've heard number of members in the live-band can go up to 12 or so), coming on by walking (and playing and singing) through the crowd. there's a lot of fun in their performance while joel gibbs voice and appearance (somewhat sleepy-eyed) adds a subtle hint of melancholy. about the voice: there's no sommerville connection in my perception at all, but i can relate to your description you provided above. it has a very nice, smoothily cracked quality. ... link ... comment |
